GSI is a heavy ion research center funded by the Federal Government of Germany and the state of Hesse. The laboratory performs basic and applied research in physics and related natural science disciplines using a heavy ion accelerator facility.
GSI is located in Darmstadt, Germany, and is a member of the association of national research centers Hermann von Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren (HGF).
