Title:	A new detector for the focal plane of the PRISMA spectrometer
Abstract:	The Multi-Wire Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (MWPPAC) currently installed at the focal plane of the large acceptance spectrometer PRISMA was designed to be used with medium-mass heavy-ion beams delivered by the Tandem/PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex. Intrinsic efficiencies lower than 1% have been measured for the detection of light ions during the experimental campaigns of PRISMA coupled to γ-array CLARA. In order to overcome this limitation a new detector has been designed and constructed to increase the intrinsic efficiency. It is a wire electrode based device with smaller diameter wires (10 μm instead of 20 μm) for the X anodic plane. The Y-plane wires were not changed because their length (1 m) does not allow to further reduce the diameter. The X position efficiency in this configuration is increased by the higher electric field which produces higher gas gains. Preliminary bench-tests performed by using α particles from a 241Am source evidenced the improved sensitivity of the detector. The pulse height distributions of the cathode signal have been measured for different working pressures and bias voltages. The charge calibration of the MWPPAC allowed us to study the evolution of the gas gain as a function of the reduced electric field. In-beam tests were carried out with 32S and 16O beams elastically scattered onto 197Au targets. Acceptable efficiencies have been measured for 16O ions with respect to the presently mounted detector. The results of tests in terms of time and position resolution, intrinsic efficiency and gas gain will be presented.
