Title:	First results from electron emission channeling on-line experiments
Abstract:	The characteristic feature of emission channeling is that charged particles emitted by radioactive atoms in a single crystal may be used to pinpoint the radioisotope lattice site with a precision that can reach 1/100 of an Å in favorable cases. The charged particles experience channeling or blocking effects due to the repulsive or attractive interaction with the nuclear charges along rows or planes of atoms, resulting in their anisotropic emission in an angular range of a few degrees from the major crystallographic directions that is detected by means of position-sensitive detectors. In the case of electron emitting isotopes, however, due to count rate limitations of the detection systems, the technique had been restricted to isotopes with half lives above ~6 h. Using a newly developed on-line setup equipped with a position-sensitive Si pad detector with fast readout system, the two isotopes 56Mn (2.58 h) and 61Co (1.6 h) were successfully used at CERN's ISOLDE for β- emission channeling experiments of the lattice location of Mn in GaN and of Co in ZnO. Since the new on-line setup allows implanting the radiosotope and measuring its electron emission channeling patterns at the same time, there exists no lower limit for suitable half-lives as long as the radioactive beam intensity is high enough. In the future, besides 56Mn and 61Co it is also intended to carry out lattice location experiments using 65Ni (2.5 h) and 27Mg (9.46 min). In all these cases no suitable long-lived isotopes exist and a range of new elements has thus been made available for emission channeling.
