Title: Hyperfine Studies: a Nanoscopic Tool on Highly Distorted Rare-Earth Manganites

Abstract: RMnO3 (R=Eu, Gd, Ho, Y, Er and Lu) perovskite manganites can exhibit coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism offering the prospect of new magnetoelectric devices through the coupling between magnetic and dielectric ordering. Looking forward to investigate locally the interplay between structural, electric and magnetic degrees of freedom, ceramic samples have been synthesized via sol-gel methods and studied with the Perturbed Angular Correlation (PAC) technique. The PAC technique may provide valuable information for the development of theoretical models by measuring the Electric Field Gradients (EFG)/ Magnetic Hyperfine Fields (MHF) in the probe zone aiming looking for correlations between these local parameters and elemental R parameters as, e.g., the ionic radius. At ISOLDE small pellets were implanted with 111mCd and subsequently annealed to remove remaining defects. The PAC measurements have been performed from 10K up to 573K for the same samples. These results are compared with the ones previously obtained for other perovskite manganites like LaMnO3, PrMnO3 and CaMnO3.
