Title:	A new TOF neutron spectrometer (ELENA) for studying giant resonances
Abstract:	Relativistic heavy-ion beams and especially rare-isotope beams open up a new avenue for studying giant resonances in inverse kinematical reactions. In addition, a large part of physical background can be suppressed by using kinematically complete experiments. We are planning to study spin-isospin giant resonances in (p,n)-type reactions. Using thick targets without disturbing the energy spectrum of the recoiled neutrons has an importance in experiments with rare-isotope beams to achieve reasonable statistics. On the other hand, a resolution of 10 % in the determination of the neutron kinetic energy requires a resolution of 1 degree in the scattering angle. Therefore a newly designed and developed time of flight scintillator array was built at ATOMKI Debrecen. The array consists of 15 scintillator bars with dimensions of 45×10×1000 mm3, and with fast photomultiplier tubes (XP2262) on both ends. The whole system is mounted on a hollow aluminum frame to reduce the amount of material which can scatter the neutrons. Detailed Monte-Carlo simulations of the TOF array were performed using the GEANT4 code. The detection efficiency of the system was measured using a 252Cf fission source, which neutron spectrum is precisely known. The start signal was generated by the fission fragments detected with thin (0.2 mm) plastic scintillators. The energy resolution of the system was measured with mono-energetic neutrons produced by different (p,n) reactions at the Debrecen cyclotron laboratory. In the presentation I will compare the experimental data to the simulated ones.
