Title:	A new approach to the study of ECR heating, electron and ion dynamics in ECR Ion Sources
Abstract:	The trend of electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS) to higher frequency and to higher magnetic field is driven by the need to have higher beam currents and higher charge states for nuclear physics accelerators. The investigation of the ECRIS plasma properties is still not complete and new information can guide towards the increase of ECRIS performances, overcoming the limits imposed by the magnets¿ and microwaves generator¿s technology. Recently, several experiments have shown that small changes of the microwave frequency strongly change the extracted currents and the achievable charge states (Frequency Tuning Effect) and they also influence the ion beam shape. The ECR-heating, the electron and the ion dynamics have been studied by means of numerical simulations (based on single particle and PIC approaches). Simulations explain the frequency tuning in terms of the microwave field distribution over the resonance surface (it changes with the excited mode, i.e. with the frequency). In addition they show that a further improvement of ECRIS performances can be obtained thanks to the Two Frequency Heating (TFH), with an adequate phase relation between the two incoming waves. Hence future experiments based on a multi-frequency heating of ECRIS plasmas can be outlined. The electron dynamics at relatively high energies (up to 1.5 MeV) has been also investigated; electrons at these energies are important for the 3rd generation ECRIS, as they are detrimental for the long term reliability and they make the source unstable.
