Title:	Performance of an AGATA prototype detector estimated by Compton-imaging techniques
Abstract:	The next generation of gamma‑ray spectrometers will consist of position‑sensitive segmented germanium detectors. Position sensitivity is achieved by comparing, event by event, the shape of the signals of all the electrodes with a reference set of signals calculated on a fine grid of points inside the crystal. Subsequently the event can be reconstructed by determining the scattering path of each transition in the detector. The AGATA project aims at the construction of a 4pi gamma-spectrometer based on pulse shape analysis and gamma‑ray tracking. State-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated that the performance of such a gamma‑ray array is strongly dependent on the precision to which the interaction points are localized inside the Ge crystal. An in‑beam experiment was performed for the first time with a triple AGATA cluster of segmented Ge detectors, to validate the results of the simulations under realistic experimental conditions. As the analysis of in¿beam experiments is complex and time consuming, a handy possibility is the use of the Compton imaging techniques with standard gamma‑ray sources. While in gamma‑ray tracking the interaction points are analysed under the assumption of a known origin of the photons, in Compton‑imaging the energy of the photon is known and the interaction points are used to determine the position of the source. Clearly, the quality of the reconstructed image can be used as a sensitive measure of the position resolution parameter.
