Title:	Pulse-shape analysis for the AGATA gamma-ray spectrometer
Abstract:	The next generation of high-performance gamma-ray spectrometers currently under construction in Europe (AGATA) and the USA (GRETINA) are based on so called gamma-ray tracking: The path and the energy of the incident gamma rays are reconstructed from the interaction points within the detector volume. This thanks to highly segmented germanium detectors in combination with the application of advanced pulse-shape analysis (PSA) techniques. The PSA is based on comparing pulses in a data base from known interaction positions with the output from a detector under the assumption that the detector response in linear. It is therefor crucial that for each detector in the spectrometer there is an accurate data base of reference pulse shapes. In this presentation/poster the most important aspects of PSA are discussed. The construction of pulse-shape databases by combining 3D scanning of the detector response with advanced pulse-shape calculation tools developed within the AGATA community is described. Different tests of the PSA capabilities of the AGATA prototype detectors are discussed. This includes both the comparisons between different PSA algorithms and the different types of experiments used to test the PSA. From this work very promising results will be shown: Using a non-validated pulse-shape data base a position resolution of less than that of the 5 mm FWHM specification has been achieved.
