Title:	Results from SAFERIB: Improved Safety and Radioprotection for RIB Facilities
Abstract:	In view of the fact that the radioactive inventory of next-generation radioactive beam facilities will be of the same order as in a nuclear research reactor, it is obvious that radioprotection issues will become a crucial element both for licensing and for operating these new facilities. Within the SAFERIB activity certain key issues on safety and radioprotection have been adressed: a concept for an intense fission source has been developed with emphasis on safe handling and operation, a remote-controlled target manipulator has been designed and a cryotrapping concept has been developed to localize unwanted volatile radioactivity. Moreover, the radioactive inventory of used fission targets has been characterized in order to identify safe handling and disposal strategies. Radiation shielding issues related to high-power accelerators and target stations have been addressed, including studies on the activation of ground water. An overview of projects results in the different subtasks will be given.
