Title:	Determination of nuclear static moments using post-accelerated exotic beams: Coulomb excitation of neutron-rich 44Ar at SPIRAL
Abstract:	Recently a new interest in Coulomb excitation method has been drawn by availability of radioactive ion beams from ISOL facilities, allowing to perform projectile excitation of short-lived exotic nuclei. The level of statistics reached in such experiments allows usually only to obtain an integral cross-section value for the 2+1→0+ transition, which is a function of both the transitional matrix element and the quadrupole moment of the 2+1 state. Therefore in order to extract values of matrix elements from the measured cross-section, lifetime of the state in question has to be measured independently [1]. The other possibility is to assume magnitudes of the matrix elements involved in the excitation process or relations between them basing on model predictions [2]. The low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment of an exotic 44Ar beam from SPIRAL was the first one to measure the quadrupole moment of a radioactive nucleus without need for constraints from complementary lifetime measurements. The measured value of B(E2;2+1→0+), corresponding to beta deformation of almost 0.3, is in agreement with the result of an earlier intermediate-energy Coulex experiment [3]. The quadrupole moment of the first 2+ state proves prolate shape of the 44Ar nucleus and indicates onset of deformation already two protons and two neutrons away from the doubly-magic 48Ca. [1] A.
