Title:	Beta-decay study of 65-67Fe and laser spectroscopy of stable nickel isotopes at LISOL
Abstract:	Making use of element selective resonant laser ionization in a buffer gas cell combined with mass separation at the LISOL facility, purified beams of short-lived Fe, Co and Ni isotopes were produced in a proton-induced fission reaction on 238U. Their decay was studied using a newly developed detection station consisting out of segmented germanium detectors of the MINIBALL type. In combination with the low-intensity but purified beams a slow decay correlation technique could be used, which was essential to identify a 492-keV isomer of 0.5 s half-life in 67Co (Z=27, N=40). The discovery of this unexpected low-energy isomer, interpreted as a proton 1p-2h excitation through Z=28, marks the first time that an intruder state is so low in energy adjacent to a 'double-magic' nucleus and reveals valuable information on the strength of the N=40 and Z=28 closed (sub-)shells. Also in 65Co and 66Co candidates for a low-energy proton intruder have been identified. Next to nuclear decay studies, laser spectroscopy measurements have been developed by combining stopping of reaction products in a gas cell with laser ionization in the RF structure that transports the ions from the high-pressure zone around the gas cell to the high-vacuum zone of the mass separator. The feasibility of this technique has been proven off-line using stable nickel isotopes and on-line experiments are underway. This new technique should allow laser spectroscopy measurements of weakly produced isotopes of refractory-type elements with increased sensitivity.
