Title:	Diamond Detectors for Heavy Ions
Abstract:	At the upcoming FAIR (Facility for Antiproton Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany, radiation hard detectors for tracking and TOF measurements are required in experiments with high intensity secondary beams. Due to its intrinsic properties like high charge carrier mobility, smallest lattice constant, large band-gap, and very high thermal conductivity diamond is an ideal material to meet these demands. The idea is to combine high resolution tracking and TOF measurement in one thin (100 µm) layer of a solid state detector. We develop such devices for the R3B experiment (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) from polycrystalline CVD diamond which is recently available in good qualities also in large areas. Basic tests on small samples were performed at the tandem accelerator in Munich. Large area prototypes have been successfully implemented in the R3B test setup at GSI (Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung) in Darmstadt. We will present results on particle tracking with two of these devices as well as performance figures for the electronics especially developped for this purpose.
