Title:	Shielding Design for the Target Area of the Super-FRS
Abstract:	The fragment separator Super-FRS is an important part of the planned international facility for antiproton and ion research (FAIR). The Super-FRS is an in flight facility and serves for the production of rare isotopes via fragmentation or fission. The produced fragments and the surviving primary beam leave the production target in forward direction. Depending on the setting the isotope of interest can be selected but the survived primary beam must be stopped before the degraders. If the primary beam hits the degraders it would require thick shielding in this area, second the degraders can possibly be destroyed. For stopping the primary beam six beam catchers are planned to use after the production target. Thus for the safe operation of the Super-FRS around the production target and the beam catchers thick shielding is required. The Monte Carlo code FLUKA was used for the shielding design of the facility and for the prediction of the residual doses due to activation of components. In accordance with the authorities the design goal for the dose rate outside the shielding with permanent access of personnel is 0.5 µSv/h. Thus this dose limit can be reached by using massive iron blocks (thickness ≈2m) around the beam tube and the magnets plus an additional concrete part of up to 6 m. On top of the iron shielding it is foreseen to have a working platform for the maintenance works. According to the FLUKA prediction the residual dose rates on the working platform are tolerable for short time access after a certain cooling time in the order of 1 month.
