Title:	Laboratory astrophysics experiments with Megagauss magnetic fields
Abstract:	Two terawatt-class devices at the Nevada Terawatt Facility (University of Nevada, Reno) offer unique possibilities to study plasma dynamics with large external magnetic fields. The laser system Leopard can be used either as a short-pulse laser system (50 TW, 15 J, 300 fs) or as a long-pulse laser system (20 J, 1.5 ns). The 2 TW pulsed-power generator Zebra (1 MA peak current, 100 ns risetime) can be used to generate external magnetic fields of up to a Megagauss (100 T) for laser experiments or to drive experiments using magnetic flyer acceleration or wire arrays. In this case, the laser can be used for diagnostics, such as x-ray backlighting. In this paper, we present results from several laboratory astrophysics experiments, studying the penetration of conductive plasma through strong magnetic fields and the growth of sheared-flow driven instabilities. We also present results from magnetic acceleration tests with aluminum foils, reaching velocities of up to 8 km/s for 50 micron thick flyer plates.
