Title:	Proton Microscope for FAIR - PRIOR project
Abstract:	Proton radiography or microscopy is a novel technique for probing the interior of dense objects in dynamic experiments by mono-energetic beams of GeV-energy protons. Using this technique, one can measure the areal density of a thick sample with sub- percent accuracy. The spatial resolution is a few micrometers over a centimeter-wide field of view, whereas the time resolution is on the nanosecond scale. Recently an international collaboration between GSI, TUD, JIHT, IPCP, ITEP and LANL scientists, called PRIOR project (Proton Microscope for FAIR), was started for the development and optimize a new proton microscopy facility for future HED physics experiments at FAIR. The main goal of the PRIOR project is to design and construct a proton microscope for 4.5 GeV protons capable of collecting multiple time radiographs with micron-level resolution, according to the requirements for the HEDgeHOB collaboration experiments at FAIR. The PRIOR microscope will be able to initially be fielded at GSI for testing and commissioning with the same SIS-18 proton beam as later used at FAIR. The ready- made PRIOR system will be moved to the HEDgeHOB experimental area at FAIR as soon as it is available. In parallel to designing and building the radiography system, the initial dynamic experiments would be designed and an international user community would be developed. PRIOR installation at GSI and commissioning in dynamic experiments with the 4.5 GeV proton beam from the SIS-18 synchrotron is currently under discussion.
