Title:	Influence of Initial Target Inhomogeneity in Ion-Driven Warm Dense Matter Experiments
Abstract:	In relation to ion-driven warm dense matter experiments, energy deposition of heavy ion beams in a sub-range foam target was investigated using a 1D hydrodynamic code. In this code, the projectile stopping cross section as a function of the target temperature and the target density was embedded. The porous target was mimicked by a stack of thin solid foils, where the averaged pore diameter and the cell-wall thickness corresponded to the gap between foils and the foil thickness, respectively. We assumed a combination of a Na (Z1 = 11) projectile and an Al (Z2 = 13) target. The density and the thickness of the foam target were 1/10 solid density and 60 microns, respectively. The beam flux and the pulse duration were 1-4 GW/mm2 (peak) and 1 ns (FWHM), respectively. The projectile energy, 1 MeV/u, was determined so that the Bragg peak was located at the center of the stack. For target temperatures lower than 10 eV, the macroscopic hydrodynamic responses of the inhomogeneous (foam) target and its homogeneous equivalent were similar each other. However, we found that the microscopic inhomogeneity was not completely smeared out even after gaps were filled with blow-off materials, since hot dense spots appeared at the original position of pores (gaps) due to stagnation of the jets. Before homogenization, at the early stage of the heating, the total energy loss in the target decreased with increasing the initial pore size of the foam target. However, after homogenization at the end of pulse duration, the energy loss was almost independent on the initial pore size.
