Title:	Stacked-washer Einzel lens systems for high space-charge intensity beam transport
Abstract:	Einzel lenses provide simple electrostatic optics for transverse focusing of low energy charged particle beams. Here we analyze stacked-washer Einzel lens systems for transport of intense charged particle beams. It is shown that optimized stacked-washer Einzel lens transport can effectively focus surprisingly high space-charge intensities making the simple, economical technology attractive for a wide variety of machine front ends or low energy facilities for warm dense matter applications. An approximate analytical solution for the fields of stacked washer Einzel lens systems it derived. Linear single particle equations of motion and corresponding envelope equations are derived and applied to optimize focusing strength and derive accurate formulas simply characterizing matched envelope properties and transportable beam perveance (current). Practical system issues including transverse geometry extents and breakdown suppression are concretely quantified. WARP particle-in-cell simulations are carried out to quantify applied field nonlineararities and acceptable aperture filling factors needed to maintain beam quality.
