Title:	Profitable HIF Power Production in the Near Term
Abstract:	This paper outlines the approach of Fusion Power Corporation (FPC) to bring profitable, large-scale HIF power on-stream by 2020. To assure solid marketshare and profitability, the fusion power system must meet certain basic requirements, and these solutions must be defined in financial terms to attract the necessary capital investment. Safety, reliability, environmental issues, and approval by authorities must be included along with construction and operating costs in projecting the cost per equivalent barrel of oil (BOE). While fusion energy release is not the only criteria, and achieving fusion burn does not guarantee marketshare or capital acquisition, without ignition, all other questions are moot. FPC¿s approach to ignition follows the conclusion of the first workshop in 1976 that HIF faced ¿no showstoppers¿ on the path to power, and is aligned even more specifically with the phrasing of this outlook by John Foster in 1979 that HIF ¿would be¿ the conservative approach.¿ In this context, ¿conservative¿ means not only that accelerators have the necessary repetition rate, efficiency, reliability, and durability, but that HIF systems also have the ability to meet ignition requirements ¿conservatively¿, i.e., exceed these requirements. Exploiting these characteristics, FPC¿s approach engages HIF¿s huge economies of scale to realize highly profitable operations. Energy production per site comparable to a large oil field will address the world¿s urgent energy problem, producing liquid fuels and electricity, and squelch spurious harassment about the cost of the HIF driver.
