Title:	Energy Transfer Processes in Burning Fusion Targets
Abstract:	After ignition fusion targets consists of a hot burning region and dense colder matter surrounding it. Efficient, high-gain burn is only possible if a sufficient fraction of this colder material is heated above temperatures of 10keV. This heating must be obtained through a chain that starts with the alpha-particles generated by fusion. These particles give their energy mainly to the electrons in the surrounding medium. Finally, the ions are heated by the equilibration of this two-temperature system. The processes in the chain above are well described for the hot, low-density plasmas that are already burning. Here, several theoretical approaches give a consistent picture. The description of the colder medium is complicated by the fact that both degenerate electrons and strong forces between the particles must be included. Here, we apply a quantum statistical approach for the stopping power and the temperature relaxation that can treat both effects. The results show a considerably reduced energy transfer from the alpha-particle to electrons and also from the electrons to the plasma ions. Moreover, we must consider the above effects also in the quasi-equation of state. This can be done on the level of a hybrid model for weakly interacting, but degenerate electrons and classical, but strongly coupled ions.
