Title:	Fuel Target Implosion in Heavy Ion Fusion
Abstract:	Fuel target implosion is studied by 2-dimensional fluid simulations in heavy ion fusion (HIF) in detail. An optimized target provides a high target gain of ~130 and a high implosion efficiency of ~23%. Heavy ion beam (HIB) serves a superior tool to study and to produce a high energy density state and HIF plasma. We have been pursuing a robust fuel target implosion mode by computer simulations in HIF: to this end, research issues include high-performance implosion mode, HIB illumination uniformity, fuel target implosion uniformity, the Rayleigh-Taylor (R-T) instability mitigation, a non-uniformity smoothing by radiation, etc. In this paper we present a new fuel target design to obtain a high performance implosion mode, in which a higher target gain and a higher implosion efficiency are realized. The new target has a light material of Carbon as the HIB energy absorber, and a higher implosion efficiency of 23% was obtained. The input HIB pulse is also optimized, and a high pellet gain of ~130 was successfully obtained.
