Title:	20MJ Single-Pass RF Driver With Fast Ignition
Abstract:	The Single-Pass RF Driver (SPRFD) provides beams exceeding known requirements and is 100% once-through, answering criticisms of HIDIF. À la Sharkov, the pellet uses cylindrical compression and axial fast ignition (F-I). The 20MJ compression pulse telescopes ten isotopes similar to 20GeV Xe. The F-I pulse telescopes 6 isotopes similar to 13GeV Pb. The F-I pulse¿s range is just twice the desired rho-R, reducing F-I power needs to ca. 300TW. The linac is based on 4 HIDIF linacs in parallel. À la ANL¿s 1979 100mA Xe demo, the 64 front ends close-couple compact ion source clusters to 1.5MV columns and then to the buncher RFQs, each contributing 78mA to the linac output. Each time-phased species is 20µsec of useful beam, divided by 100nsec gaps into 8 ¿slugs¿. After a beamline tree aligns species, the four main linacs follow HIDIF up to the telescoping rigidity of the heaviest ion. Differential acceleration of their µbunches ¿snugs¿ slugs from 2.5µsec to 250nsec. Then µbunch speeds are re-equalized by the reverse process. After the telescoper, the 4 beams are merged in the transverse planes. Now the transverse and longitudinal emittances are defined. Thence, distributed RF cavities preserve the µbunches. Two, single-pass delay loops sort the 250nsec slugs into 4 beamlines. A 10-turn helical delay line shortens the beam ca. 95%. Nearing the chamber, differential acceleration starts slugs on final collapse. The momentum spread to focus is that of one µbunch plus the differential kick (≤ 0.25%). Allowing 3x transverse emittance growth, HIDIF lenses give the 50µm F-I spot.
