Title:	Precision determination of QED contributions to the ground state in medium heavy one and two-electron ions
Abstract:	We report on transition energies for hydrogenlike and heliumlike S, Ar, and Fe ions, which we have absolutely determined with unprecedented accuracy using electron beam ion traps (EBIT). For the Lyman-$\alpha_1$ wavelength of Ar$^{17+}$, our novel laser-assisted Bond method \cite{kubicek12} yielded a result of 3731.100(9)\,mA (3322.993(8)\,eV), twice as accurate than the hitherto best value for any hydrogenlike system \cite{beyer85}. Consequently, our work probes most sensitively the predicted combination of QED self energy (1.2184(4)\,eV), vacuum polarization (-0.0857\,eV) and nuclear size (NS; 0.0091\,eV) contributions. Moreover, in comparison to results for U$^{91+}$ ions \cite{gumberidze05}, where the systematic uncertainty of the NS term (2.5\,eV) is on the order of the experimental one (4.6\,eV) and thus hides higher-order QED terms, our value tests precisely these contributions. The prediction of 3731.100\,mA (3322.992\,eV) \cite{johnson85} is exactly confirmed, suggesting Lyman-$\alpha$ lines as ideal new X-ray wavelength standards. Furthermore, our tenfold improved result for the $2p\,1s\ ^1P_1 \rightarrow 1s^2\ ^1S_0$ resonance line in He-like S$^{14+}$, 4695.256(6)\,mA (2640.627(3)), represents the most precise X-ray wavelength reported for highly charged ions (HCIs) to date. It allows us to test both the latest bound-state QED (BSQED) predictions \cite{artemyev05} on two-electron and two-photon radiative corrections to the $^1S_0$ ground state (0.0751\,eV) and the one-electron QED corrections to the $^1P_1$ excited state (0.0038\,eV) of S$^{14+}$.
