Title:	A proposal for muon-proton elastic scattering at PSI
Abstract:	While all measurements of the proton charge radius using electrons, both in scattering as well as in Lamb shift of atomic hydrogen, are consistent with each other, there has been a large discrepancy with the recent result for the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen. So far, there has been no determination of the proton charge radius from muon-proton scattering. We have proposed a new set of measurements of elastic scattering from the proton, which uses secondary beams of muons and electrons of either charge sign, to be carried out at PSI. From these measurements, the difference of muon and electron cross sections will be studied with high precision, and the proton charge radius will be extracted for each lepton probe from the observed change of the form factor with momentum transfer. Comparison of yields from both charge signs will at the same time disentangle effects of two-photon exchange.
