Title:	A cryogenic Paul trap for experiments with highly charged ions
Abstract:	Highly charged ions (HCIs) are of particular interest for metrology (atomic clocks), QED studies, and for searches of physics beyond the Standard Model with, e.g. , the highest sensitivity for a changing ne structure constant predicted for an atomic system so far. An unprecedented resolution improvement in HCI laser spectroscopy can be obtained when HCIs are cooled down from the MK temperatures present in an electron beam ion trap -where the HCIs are created and studied- to the mK range when cooled in a linear Paul trap. Such storage and cooling requires ultra-high vacuum levels obtainable by cryogenic methods. We have developed a linear Paul trap operating at 4 K with external ion injection capabilities. Optimized optical access for laser light is provided while exposure to black body radiation (BBR) is minimized. Results of experiments with molecular ions are presented. These measurements exploit in particular the low exposure to BBR. An all-solid state laser system at 313 nm has been set up for the Doppler laser cooling of Be+ ions that will serve as sympathetic coolants of HCIs.
