Title:	Detection techniques to determine the properties of laser-cooled relativistic ion beams
Abstract:	Laser cooling of relativistic ions requires optical methods to precisely determine the ion beam properties. Since laser cooling can reach unprecedented low momentum spreads, it is vital to measure these spreads and their effects on the collective ion beam dynamics. With a combination of photomultipliers and in-vacuum channeltrons, it will be possible to measure the fluorescence with a much larger solid angle than previous ESR laser cooling experiments could achieve. Together with new laser systems and new ion beam diagnostics, it will become possible to gain more insight into the dynamics of ultracold relativistic ion beams at high particle densities. We will present the experimental setup, detector test results, news on laser developments, and the new data acquisition and control system.
