Title:	Microcalorimeters for precision X-ray spectroscopy on highly-charged heavy ions
Abstract:	Microcalorimeters detect the temperature change of an absorber after an incoming particle has deposited its kinetic energy as heat. This operation principle provides considerable advantage over conventional detectors with respect to energy resolution, detection efficiency, energy threshold and radiation hardness. For the detection of X-rays, microcalorimeters consist of arrays of silicon thermometers and X-ray absorbers made of high-Z material. With such detectors, a relative energy resolution of about 1 permille is obtained in the energy regime of 1-100 keV. A prototype array if eight pixels has been applied successfully for the determination of the Lamb shift of Pb81+ at the ESR in a first test experiment [1]. Based on the results of this test, a full array with 32 pixels and an energy resolution of 40 eV at 60 keV has been prepared. It will allow to obtain a precision of better than 5 eV for the Lamb shift in highly-charged heavy ions. The application of microcalorimeters for high-precision X-ray spectroscopy is an established subject within the SPARC program. Especially at the NESR and in combination with the HITRAP facility, where Doppler broadening of the observed X-ray lines becomes negligible, the excellent energy resolution of such detectors will open a new and interesting range of precision spectroscopy experiments. The presentation will discuss the detection principle and performance of microcalorimeters as well as the technical challenges. An overview on potential applications will be given. [1] V.
