Title:	Manifestation of ionic single- and double-excited states in sequential ionization by intense VUV pulses
Abstract:	A few-photon sequential ionization proceeding via formation and evolution of positively charged ions gives new information on ionic structure and interaction of ions with electromagnetic field. Two-photon double ionization has been studied both theoretically and experimentally [1,2] and even a such subtle characteristic as outgoing electron angular correlations has been measured and discussed [3,4]. Different aspects of three-photon double ionization are currently under study [5-8]. Two types of resonant enhancement in sequential ionization from the outer shell of noble gases occur: a) ionization through discrete (excited) ionic states and b) ionization through autoionizing ionic states. Only the first mechanism was considered so far, but new experiments with free electron lasers (FLASH, SPring-8) and our theoretical analysis have convincingly proved that the second mechanism is crucially important.
