Title:	Micro-calorimeter arrays based on metallic magnetic calorimeters for high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy
Abstract:	Metallic magnetic calorimeters (MMC) are calorimetric particle detectors, typically operated at temperatures below 100mK, that make use of a paramagnetic temperature sensor to transform the temperature rise upon the absorption of a photon in the detector into a measurable magnetic flux change in a dc-SQUID. For soft x-rays an energy resolution of 2.7eV (FWHM) has been demonstrated and we expect that this can be pushed below 1eV with the next generation of devices. We discuss the physics of magnetic calorimeters, their optimization and micro-fabrication. We present the status of development of two arrays of MMCs for high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy at GSI/FAIR. The one for soft x-rays has high quantum efficiency for x-rays up to 20 keV, an expected energy resolution of about 2.5eV (FWHM) and a signal risetime below 100ns. The second array is optimized for x-ray energies up to 200keV. Recent experimental tests of the energy resolution of the latter array showed an energy resolution of 40eV (FWHM).
