Title:	Measurement of the Linear Polarization of Bremsstrahlung in Polarized Electron-Atom Collisions
Abstract:	Electron-nucleus bremsstrahlung is one of the basic photon-matter processes. Of particular theoretical and experimental interest are the bremsstrahlung polarization correlations, such as the polarization transfer from the incident electrons to the emitted bremsstrahlung photons. Moreover, the study of the influence of the incident electron spin polarization on the bremsstrahlung linear polarization properties is also related to the diagnostic of stored polarized ions as proposed within the frame of the future FAIR facility. At the polarized electron source SPIN of the TU Darmstadt we studied the linear polarization properties of bremsstrahlung occurring in polarized electron-atom collisions. Thin gold foil targets were bombarded with 100 keV electrons of different spin orientation and the emitted bremsstrahlung photons were recorded by a novel position sensitive Si(Li) detector dedicated for Compton polarimetry in the x-ray regime. The discussion is focused on the properties of the linear polarization of photons induced by unpolarized and transversely polarized electrons. The non-zero electron polarization in the latter case gives rise to a rotation of the photon polarization vector with respect to the reaction plane and to an enhanced degree of the linear polarization in comparison to the unpolarized case.
