Title:	Polarization properties of elastic photon scattering
Abstract:	Elastic scattering of high-energetic photons by atoms provide insights into the structure of atomic systems. Over a large energy range, elastic scattering is used as a tool for the study of atoms in varied environments as well as the study of QED effects [1]. Under large scattering angles, the elastic Rayleigh scattering is well resolved from inelastic Compton scattering. This enables the measurement of the ratio of the inelastic differential cross section to the elastic differential cross section. Furthermore, recent development of efficient Compton polarimeters allows the study of polarization properties of scattered photons for energies between 70 keV and a few hundred keV [2]. This can be reached by using high-Z targets and a beam of linearly polarized photons, provided by synchrotron facilities. Recently a proof of principle measurement was carried out at the DORIS III synchrotron where the radiation scattered from gold and nickel targets was studied with respect to the ratio of inelastic to elastic differential cross section as well as the degree of linear polarization [3]. Current work concentrates on the improvement of the experimental setup via a new vacuum chamber and a new target station. Future measurements are expected to provide detailed information regarding the degree of linear polarization of elastic scattered photons as well as angular differential cross sections.
