Title:	A Concept for a Spin-Polarized Electron Target in a Heavy Ion Storage Ring
Abstract:	PEGASUS is project to realize a polarized electron gun assembly for spin studies with beams of highly charged ions. It builds upon a GaAs photocathode electron gun, which serves as an efficient source of highly polarized electron beams. With a combination of electrostatic and magnetic fields the orientation of the incident electron polarization can be freely controlled. Moreover, the intertaction zone of the electrons with ions circulating in the storage ring will be featuring a flexible setup such that it allows for either transverse or longitudinal beam alignments. Here we lay out the planned design an report on its present status. First experiments are foreseen to address a complete description of electron induced emission of X-rays in inelastic collisions with heavy ions. These require the knowlede of the full quantum state of all involved reactants, in particular determining the orientation of the polarization vector. We will employ Compton polarimetry of X-ray photons, which has become in our laboratory an established technique in such experiments. In the literature so far corresponding experiments were mostly carried out with unpolarized electron sources.
