Title:	What does 4D treatment planning tell us about dose to moving normal tissues?
Abstract ( 300 words ):	Charged particle treatment techniques are designed to ensure target coverage even in the presence of motion and uncertainty. This is accomplished by designing portals that encompass the ITV, adding a distal margin, and using a smeared compensator. Adjusting density of ITV lung targets is also performed to ensure coverage during temporal variations of tissue density. We are analyzing the impact of motion on the EUD to normal tissues, specifically in the irradiation of liver and lung tumors. We use Aqualyzer, a 4D research treatment planning system, with deformable registration to assess dose to moving structures. The difference between a 3D plan and a 4D plan, depends on tumor characteristics, motion, and other case-specific parameters, but can be as large as 2-3 Gy in EUD of a normal organ. To date, we have performed the 4D treatment planning analysis on over 20 liver tumor cases and four lung tumor cases. We discuss the need and justification for 4D planning.
