Title:	Scientific program of the new division "Plasma Physics with intense Ion and Laser Beams"
Abstract:	Very recently the former Plasma Physics division at GSI was combined with the PHELIX project group to form a new division "Plasma Physics with intense Ion and Laser Beams". Within this division a strong experimental program is built around the infrastructures at the UNILAC accelerator (Z6-Area), at SIS 18 (HHT-Area), and PHELIX. As a unique combination, a laser beam line delivers nanosecond pulses from PHELIX to the Z6-Area. The scope of the science program covers a wide field of plasma physics experiments using heavy-ion beams, laser beams, and the combination of laser and heavy-ion beams. Within EMMI this offers outstanding opportunities to study extreme states of matter. A short overview of the scientific program with special emphasis on proposals relevant to EMMI will be presented.
