The superconducting magnet 'ILSE' is part of the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer 'HADES' which is currently set up at GSI. The toroidal magnet (diameter 4 m) consists of 6 superconducting coils mounted in individual coil cases with a total thickness of 80 mm only.
At a current of 3500A a maximum field of 3.8 Tesla is obtained. The magnet was successfully cooled down to liquid Helium temperature and reached full field on July 8th, 1998. On July 21st, a Au beam with 900 MeV/nucleon was successfully focussed onto a target located in the center of the magnet. First experiments utilizing electron positron pairs as a probe to look inside compressed nuclei are planned for 1999.
